Despite Kennedy's unconvincing protests, we can have dessert before anything else. We're the only ones here. Who's going to stop us? Also, we're adults now, eighteen, in college, and, well...

Honestly, I just want to see the look of pure, unadulterated ecstasy on her face as she digs into the rich, caramel-covered treat.

She takes a tentative first bite, sitting primly in the overlarge chair at the table, unsure. Once her tongue touches the caramel, her eyes light up, a gasp of a moan escaping her lips before she pushes the entirety of the silver spoon into her mouth, devouring her first taste of dessert. I want to see that look again, yet altogether differently, too.

She's mine. She always has been. Ever since that day.

My treasure...

"Kennedy, please," I say, doing my best to contain my eagerness. "Savor it. I plan to."

"Um, sorry," she murmurs through a half mouthful of dessert. "It's... I've never had anything like this before. It's amazing!"

"My aunt does good work," I say, grinning at her. "Cinnamon roll?"

I reach for one of many on a silver platter in the middle of this part of the table. I mean, I brought her directly to the dessert section, so everything here is sticky sweet, but still. She stares at it for a second, unsure if we should be this decadent already. And, well, yes, we should.

I rip off a piece, offering it to her. She takes it, swallowing her previous bite of sticky date pudding, then near immediately replacing it with a hunk of sinfully gooey cinnamon roll.

"Ohmygosh," she mumbles. "It's... it's almost better than the one the Harts make at their cafe."

"It's technically from the cafe," I say, trying not to disappoint. "We add a little extra, though. Bourbon cream seared with dragonsfire. It's something of a specialty in my family."

"Right, got it," she says, grinning as if my words make perfect sense. And then, wide-eyed, she swallows hard, forcing the sticky morsel down her beautifully seductive throat before adding, "Um, what?"

"Dragonsfire," I repeat.

"From... dragons?" she asks.

"One and the same," I say, grinning.

"Can I, um... can I see one?"

"A dragon?"

"Yes?"

"I really shouldn't..." I say, smirking at her.

"Oh..." she says, more than slightly disappointed.

"But, well, if you ask," I add. "Nicely, that is."

"Uh huh?"

"And you promise not to tell anyone..." I continue.

"Is it real?" she asks, an excited glimmer in her eyes though her voice remains hesitant. "Are dragons real, I mean?"

"Very real," I say, smiling at her. "It's just that, well..."

"Yes?"

"I mean it when I say you need to keep it a secret. But there's more to it than that, Kennedy. It's, uh... there's a certain process involved, and, well... I don't want to alarm you, so..."

"I'm not," she says, entirely too fast. "Alarmed, that is. I won't be scared. I promise."

"It's not that," I say, shaking my head. "You see, the problem is that for me to be completely certain I can show you, I'd need you to swear absolutely loyalty to me."

"I... have no idea what that means?" she says, her beautiful face tilted slightly to the side.
